With the huge success of Marvel’s guardians of the galaxy, players are reminded that there is a lot of fun in store for them in games that involve extraterrestrial life. Whether on TV, in movies, or in games, there will always be creators and writers fleshing out the concept that aliens exist to terrorize humans (as well as other aliens).
Retro shoot’em up arcade games like space invaders to epic RPGs like Mass Effectthere’s never been a shortage of games in which aliens are the ultimate big bad.
Half-life 1 and 2
There’s a good reason why fans are always clamoring for a third installment in the half-life franchise. Many reviewers say Valve’s series revolutionized the first-person shooter genre by introducing an exciting new storytelling style of adventure that has rarely been seen before (and never done so well).
The first one half-life the title featured an alien invasion triggered by a failed science experiment. In the game, players will need to thwart the impending alien takeover by defeating the being holding the alien portal open.
Mass Effect 2
Among other games in the franchise, Mass Effect 2 received praise from gamers and critics, placing it among the best BioWare games. Along with the dynamic story and heart-pounding action, Mass Effect 2 features one of the greatest and baddest antagonists in video game history.
Known as Harbinger, the villain of the Mass Effect series and controlling alien leader appears every 50,000 years to convert all organic life into mindless lackeys. The smooth continuation of the first game’s story, the overarching yet well-written alien villain, and enhanced gameplay placed Mass Effect 2 in addition to the other titles in the series.
Released in 1978 as an arcade game but ported to the Atari VCS in 1980, space invaders became an instant classic that is still talked about among the most influential games of all time for its introduction of an exponentially increasing level of difficulty.
The objective of the game is simple: players must defeat endless waves of descending aliens by firing a laser. However, there is absolutely no way to beat the game and stop the alien invasion. All players can do is keep shooting until they can’t keep the aliens at bay.
In Starcraft 2, players must be smart and make the right decisions in order to defeat their opponents and destroy their structures. The main antagonist of the game is Amon, a malevolent alien who wishes to destroy the universe and rebuild it as he sees fit.
Although it was released over 10 years ago, there are a ton of reasons why gamers should revisit and play the real-time strategy game. Low system requirements, great single-player campaign, and ever-relevant competitive scene are a few compelling points for players to give it a try. Starcraft 2.
PlatinumGames’ NieR: Automata has an interesting core narrative. Thousands of years ago, aliens took over the planet and created monster robots whose current goal is to be the dominant species on earth. Today in the game, human-created androids battle robot monsters in a gruesome proxy war.
Players love the game because it contains a complex and philosophical narrative not usually found in action RPGs. In order for players to fully enjoy the game, they will need to complete multiple matches and complete all five main endings.
Ground Defense Force 5
Ground Defense Force 5 is the fifth main game in Sandlot’s alien invasion series. The aliens players encounter are a bit hit close to home, as most resemble various crawling insects like wasps, ants, cockroaches, and spiders. To add to that, there are also alien robots, drones, and even frogs that the player must quickly exterminate.
The great thing about Land Defense Force franchise is that any game can serve as a great starting point, but Ground Defense Force 5 is considered the best in the series due to its solid gameplay and improved graphics. Set twenty years after the events of the first game, XCOM 2 is a turn-based strategy game where players will have to create a supremely customizable character in order to defeat the aliens who have now taken over the earth.
Players noticed how XCOM 2 worked to eliminate the issues that plagued the first game in the series. XCOM 2 also manages to be a better game by incorporating instant combat, as well as successfully including a sense of pace in an otherwise boring campaign.
Saints Row IV
While the Saints Row the franchise may have started as a Grand Theft Auto clone, the franchise finally found its own, more whimsical identity in its fourth and fifth entries. In Saints Row 4the aliens are the main driver of the narrative, and it is the player’s mission to get to the bottom of the alien mystery.
What sets Saints Row 4 aside from its commitment to ridicule. In the game, players can find fancy weapons, out-of-this-world side quests, and outlandish customization options. Additionally, players will eventually obtain a superpower of their choice in order to defeat the alien invaders.
Following COG Private Kait Diaz, Speeds 5 is a third-person shooter RPG where players will face and defeat the infamous Swarm. The main antagonists of the game are an evolved form of the Locust Horde, which is an alien race that was said to have been decimated in previous games.
